Sera/Raptor has passed

Yesterday Sera- who must of you know as Raptor- was put to sleep. My brother and and I and many other people had been encouraging my parents to do this because she was deaf, blind, athritic so she could barely walk, and basically unresponsive and we felt bad for her. But then when my parents told me they set the date I felt so guilty because I was one of the people that had them make the decision!

But they did it yesterday and my mom said the dog looked so peaceful and happy at the end that she and my dad are both really glad they did it and feel so much relief. It's very sad, I miss Raptor!

I'm not out of the water yet, har har har

Today was day three, lessons have had ups and downs.. (up and down in the water, get it, har har)

Some highlights:

Not being able to sit while we go over skills and floating away while the instructor tries to teach us what to do underwater.

The instructor, Gene, holding my hand almost the entire time we swim underwater

Hitting the bottom, Gene reaching down to grab my hand, and suddenly a cloud of black stuff engulfing me and the hand slowly disappearing in the murky depths, then reappearing 20 sec later and grabbing me

Being unable to clear water out of my mask at a depth of 20 ft and therefore Gene having to force me into an emergency buoyant ascent.

Today, goats trying to jump into my car.. later goats trying to eat my gear on the picnic tables while we geared up, later goats running into the classroom.

Both overweight instructors in speedos.

Basically being able to do all the skills when near the surface, but the choking, somewhat litearlly, and failing to do them when actually in 20 ft of water.

It's fun... and not.. and fun.. and i'm sure it will be great when I can see in the caribean clear waters and when I am better at what I'm doing?

The Book Thief (Readers Circle)

I am not a fish.

Well guys, today was my first scuba diving lesson.. it was 5.5 hours long. Spent an hour snorkling in a lake which was fun...... but I lost my fin and we cannot find it (One of the instructors put his scuba gear and spent over an hour looking in the murky lake for it and still did not find it--- and I just bought them today and they were VERY expensive... but the instructors assure me it will eventually float to the surface and we will find it).

Also, getting into wet suits is impossible. I tried and failed, John's mom tried to get it on me and failed, the instructor tried and got it half way up... next thing I knew the instructor was on one side of me and some other instructor on the other side... and without any warning they lifted the wetsuit up... with me in it, 3 feet off the ground... and started shaking me up and down into it! Some other highlights---- no one telling me we were supposed to read AND answer questions at the back of the scuba book before class-- and therefore being the only student unable to answer questions when we went over them. Also being unable to dive more than 10 feet into the water b/c wet suits make you crazily buyount.

Oh, and the place is basically a crazy junk yard... there are about 20 goats roaming around...0 bathrooms.. something else I was not warned about and therefore had to pee the entire 5.5 hours.... and there was this adorable puppy who came and hung out... but then it got a dead baby bird.. and it was disgusting.

Tomorrow we officially scuba with all the gear and go to the bottom of the lake where there is a boat wreck and a bunch of big fish.... hopefully tomorrow goes better than today did! 4+ hours of scuba lessons per day then an EXAM on Friday--- ahhh! I feel I was not properly warned.

As difficult and crazy as it all is, it is quite hilarious and fun. Wish me luck!

As a side note*** everyone should read this book, "The Book Thief," it's reaaally good.

Another side note*** I went to dinner with my friends from DC, and a friend of a bunch of them was just strangled and almost died in her apartment in CBus. She has bruises all over her neck and blood shot eyes and the doctor said if she had been strangled for 10 secs longer (the guy stopped b/c she passed out) she would be dead. OMG

I'll tell you guys more info on all of this when I see you next week!!
